Horizon Europe update: Funding guarantee extended until 31 March 2023

12 January 2023

The UK Government has announced a further extension to the Horizon Europe Guarantee scheme, supporting UK applicants to the EU's research & innovation funding programme. The guarantee now covers all Horizon Europe calls that close on or before 31 March 2023.

Eligible, successful applicants to Horizon Europe will receive the full value of their funding at their UK host institution for the lifetime of their grant (read the Government announcement).

There are many Horizon Europe calls with deadlines beyond this guarantee extension period, and we encourage colleagues to continue apply to calls with deadlines beyond the end of March 2023, as the UK remains eligible to apply (as stated in the European Commission’s Q&A on UK participation in Horizon Europe).

UCL’s 2022 Horizon Europe proposal submissions have increased from their 2021 levels. While many results are pending, some exciting awards have already been announced, such as Slovenia’s National Institute of Chemistry being awarded €30 million from European Union to establish a new Centre for the Technologies of Gene and Cell Therapy (CTGCT). The UK’s Horizon Europe Guarantee will fund UCL’s role as key strategic partner in the development of this centre.

The European Commission (EC) has made available the 2023-2024 Horizon Europe Work Programmes and is hosting various information days throughout this month. UCL Researchers interested in applying are encouraged to contact the European Research & Innovation Office (ERIO), for support and advice. ERIO’s weekly Horizon Europe drop-in sessions are continuing in 2023, with the next session being held tomorrow, Friday 13 January 2023, at 14:00. These sessions are open to UCL colleagues and external collaborators worldwide, to discuss any questions or opportunities arising from participation in Horizon Europe. The link to join the sessions can be found on UCL’s Horizon Europe webpage.
