UCL marks Black History Month 2022

October 

• 4 October (in person): Join Dr Caroline Bressey (UCL Geography), Imagining the Black Cook in the multi-ethnic Victorian city as part of the SPRC Colloquium on Race, Ethnicity and Postcolonial Studies: 22-23, Term 1 seminar series, hosted by UCL's Sarah Parker Remond Centre 
• 6 October (virtual): Dr Rochelle Burgess, Associate Professor in Global Health and Deputy Director of the UCL Centre for Global Non-Communicable Diseases, gives an insight into the Windrush community in this free event 'Where is Home? Mapping the mental health impacts of the Windrush Scandal'. Chaired by UCL President & Provost, Dr Michael Spence. 
• 7 October– 26 October (in person): Students' Union UCL showcases the diversity of Black artistic talent at UCL with a display in the South Cloisters. 
• 10 October (in person): The Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slavery, based at UCL, is pleased to announce its first public lecture of the 2022/3 academic year. Professor Lissa Paul's lecture is titled 'Speaking the Unspeakable; Or, Providing the Evidence Without Being Censored.' 
• 13 October (in person): Join Dr H Patten MBE in conversation with dancer and performer Sheba Monserrat Smadification - The Spirituality of Jamaican Dancehall Culture for what will prove to be an educational, yet lively evening about the dancehall movement interspersed with live performance. Hosted at UCL's Bloomsbury Theatre.
• 19 October (virtual): Inclusive Spaces: Everyday Curriculums / Everyday Pedagogies - join this online event to find out how simple changes can produce a big impact in built environment education.
• 25 October (in person): Part of the Perspectives on Racialisation, Gender and Feminist Methodologies seminar series 2022-23, Decolonial Feminist Thought: A conversation between Françoise Vergès and Edna Bonhomme. Please note this event is now sold out and has a waiting list. Please contact UCL's Sarah Parker Remond Centre directly be added to the waiting list. 
• 25 October (virtual): Join Professor Paul Gilroy (UCL Centre for the Study of Race and Racism) and Dr Clive Nwonka (UCL Institute for Advanced Studies) to explore Arsenal’s historic contribution to Black sporting iconography in Black Arsenal: Race, Cultural Memory and Black British Identity. In-person tickets for this event at the Barbican are now sold out, but tickets to the live stream are still available.
• 26 October (in person): The Computer Science Race Equality Working group is hosting an in-person Black History Month event to celebrate Black Computer Scientists, network and share some Caribbean food: Black History Month: Celebrating Black Computer Scientists.
• 26 October (in person): Filmmaker, broadcaster and historian, David Olusoga, joins Professor Edward Denison (UCL Bartlett School of Architecture) for a conversation as part of the Modern Heritage in the Anthropocene Symposium, hosted by The Bartlett International Lectures Autumn 2022.
• 27 October (in person): Join Rosemary Campbell Stevens MBE, in Global Majority – A Celebration of Decoloniality and Recentring Humanity as part of the Modern Heritage of Africa / Modern Heritage in Anthropocene symposium (MoHoA), who will be discussing decoloniality and advoating the importance of centring the global majority.
• 27 October (virtual): Black History Month conference with AstroNoir and University College London. Join us for this FREE virtual panel focusing on navigating academia and industry as a Black scientist. Accomplished speakers will talk about their journey through academia; hoping to encourage the next generation of students and offer some advice.
• 31 October (in person): The School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) and Ukrainian Institute London, have co-organized Decolonising Western Coverage of Ukraine. Listen to Terrell Jermaine Starr's unique perspective as an independent black reporter based in Kyiv, reimagine the coverage of the conflict in Ukraine.
