The best job on campus? You decide

1 May 2015

Would you like to earn £11 per hour (plus holiday pay), have fun, enhance your CV, and help make a difference to the lives of future generations of students at UCL? If the answer is yes, UCL's Development & Alumni Relations Office (DARO) may have the job for you.

The best job on campus? You decide

UCL DARO is keen to recruit outgoing and reliable students to act as telephone fundraisers and support its highly successful fundraising campaigns.

The role which can fit around your studies, involves calling UCL graduates talking to them about their experience at the university and asking them to support UCL with a donation towards scholarships and bursaries, as well as teaching and research.

Vital role

Matt Excell, UCL DARO explains, "Student telephone fundraisers are essentially UCL ambassadors, who help us to cultivate life-long relationships with our alumni. They play a vital role in encouraging alumni to support UCL, both with their time and with donations.

"The role doesn't just benefit the university, it also is a great way for students to enhance their CVs. Students who have taken part in previous fundraising campaigns have developed both their negotiation and communication skills and had the chance to connect and learn from inspirational alumni.

"In addition, the position is very flexible with evening and weekend shifts available. We understand that students lead busy lives, so potential applications can be assured that we are very flexible about allowing you to work around studies and we do not hold callers to a shift pattern."

Talented telephone fundraisers

UCL's most recent crop of student telephone fundraisers is truly international with 15 different languages spoken proficiently amongst the group. They are also representative of a great proportion of the university itself, drawn from over 20 departments and split almost evenly between undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Matt adds, "Our current student telephone fundraisers are a wonderful group of talented individuals, who are passionate about UCL. Through their stellar efforts we managed to raise over £300,000 in donations and we recruited 583 new donors.

"This year we'd be keen to replicate that success and give more students at UCL the chance to gain a unique insight into the university as well as developing skills that will no doubt enhance their CV."
