Professor David Lomas appointed as new UCL Vice-Provost (Health)

27 November 2014

UCL is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor David Lomas to the role of Vice-Provost (Health), replacing Professor Sir John Tooke, from 1st August 2015.

Professor David Lomas

Professor Lomas is currently Dean of UCL Medical Sciences and Chair of Medicine, a position he has held since the start of 2013.

Previously, he was Professor of Respiratory Biology in the University of Cambridge and Honorary Consultant Physician at Addenbrooke's and Papworth Hospitals, and Deputy Director of the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research.

The Vice-Provost (Health) serves as Academic Director for UCLPartners Academic Health Science Centre, facilitating and guiding the development of its six academic medical centres. In this role, Professor Lomas will promote close partnership working across the whole geography of UCLPartners to ensure that research expertise and outputs are combined across the whole translational pathway for the overall benefits of patients and the population.

The postholder is also Head of the UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences.

The position leads an office responsible for facilitating health initiatives across UCL and building on key relationships with NHS partners, other health care trusts and NHS England. The Vice-Provost (Health) also leads UCL's participation in the establishment of the Francis Crick Institute, due to open in 2015.

I very much look forward to working with colleagues to develop the exciting health agenda across UCL, UCLPartners and the Francis Crick Institute

Professor Michael Arthur, UCL President & Provost, said: "This is a role of vital importance to UCL, to UCLPartners, and to Health across London, that also has a national and global reach in healthcare enterprise and innovation. I offer my sincere congratulations to Professor David Lomas on this key appointment. I have every confidence in David, an outstanding clinician scientist, to take us from strength to strength and to help us fulfil our ambitious strategy for Health.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the significant contribution of Professor Sir John Tooke during his time in this position, who has worked with great success to foster a spirit of partnership across the School of Life and Medical Sciences, within UCL and UCLPartners and more widely with NHS, HEI, Industry and other key partners, building mutually beneficial collaborative networks to answer the questions that no one institution, however prestigious, can answer alone."

Professor David Lomas said: "I am delighted to be appointed as Vice-Provost (Health) at UCL and Academic Director of the Academic Health Science Centre. I very much look forward to working with colleagues to develop the exciting health agenda across UCL, UCLPartners and the Francis Crick Institute."

Professor Sir John Tooke, Vice-Provost (Health) said: "I am delighted that Professor David Lomas will be succeeding me as Vice-Provost (Health) at UCL to lead SLMS on the next stage of our development in pursuit of UCL 2034. His personal research credentials and research Institute experience coupled with a passion for education and deep knowledge of industry engagement equip him wonderfully for the role. I will be working closely with David over the next eight months to ensure the smoothest possible transition and realisation of a shared ambitious academic strategy."

The initial appointment period is five years.
