Dr Derek Groen Won EU H2020 Award to Tackle Global Challenge

12 November 2018

Event Date: October 2018 Dr Derek Groen, acting as a PI, has won an EU H2020 award, entitled "HPC and Big Data Technologies for Global Systems (HiDALGO)".

The project is worth €647,000, and will run from November 2018 for three years.

The project seeks to develop advanced simulation and big data analytics approaches to help tackle some of the global grand challenges today, including guiding resource provisioning support for refugees escaping conflict, a better understanding of pollution in urban environments, and quantifying the effects of news spreading over social media networks to the wider global community. It will involve supercomputer simulations of forced migration, coupled with climate models and telecommunications data, in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a weather forecasting organisation (ECMWF) and a telecommunications company (Moonstar).

The project is part of the HiDALGO consortium, which has received a total of €8,000,000 funding from the Horizon 2020, European Data Infrastructure program.
