Professor Alessandro Olivo

Prof Olivo is the based within the Advanced X-Ray Imaging Group (AXIm). He is also Director of Studies, 2nd Year Personal and Academic tutor, primary supervisor to 4 PhD students, and regularly supervises MSc and undergraduate projects.

Revolutionary X-ray technology developed

Professor Alessandro Olivo and colleagues have developed a revolutionary X-ray technology, which excels at determining different shapes and types of matter – a capability that conventional X-rays could only match by using prohibitively high doses of radiation.

The breakthrough is the result of a major five-year international project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and led by UCL engineers. This has been followed by additional, significant grant funding from EPSRC and the Wellcome Trust, with the latter allowing the deployment of a first system in a hospital in 2019. Further funding has been obtained from various companies and Government bodies to take the technology into new directions and pursue new applications.
