First-year students are always full of excitement when they start university and to cultivate their passion in our field and give a glimpse of the medical technologies that we are pursuing in the department, we took first-year biomedical engineering students to visit five research labs as part of the module ‘ENGF0001 Engineering Challenges’.

In October, the 2023 class of ~90 students visited the Biomedical Ultrasound Lab hosted by Brad Treeby, Alisa Krokhmal, Morgan Roberts and Ben Cox, the MRI lab hosted by Sophie and Jack Wells, the EIT Lab hosted by Edvards Rutkovskis and Kirill Aristovich, the Radiation Lab hosted by Rob Moss, Ash Ajeer and Maria Perez Lara, and the Gowerlabs hosted by Nick Everdell and Nida Duobaite. The visits prompted lively discussions, even allowing some students to have a go with the research devices being developed! Led by Terence Leung and assisted by PGTAs Ben Duvieusart, Marta Masramon Munoz and Mar Casajuana Ester, ‘Engineering Challenges 1’ introduced students to teamwork, research techniques and departmental research. Having had a chance to interact with researchers during the lab visits, students were asked to produce a short video to describe a medical technology that they found most interesting. After three weeks, students moved on to ‘Engineering Challenge 2’ when they partnered with students from the Chemical and Biochemical Engineering departments to create a vaccine to treat tuberculosis in Uganda!
