A new Science Museum gallery highlighting world-changing engineering innovations and the diverse range of people behind them showcases the work of UCL’s Professor Ilias Tachtsidis.

Now open to the public, this fascinating gallery places human stories at the heart of engineering innovations and aims to inspire young people to pursue engineering careers by challenging common misconceptions about who engineers are and what they do, offering a fresh perspective on the breadth and diversity of these important roles.

“It is important to show the links between technology, engineering developments and people. The gallery manages to build the story of engineering innovations, everyday life and the impact on people. For my medical engineering developments, it shows how we use LED and digital camera technologies to image the brain and provide clinical information to help patients.”

Ilias’s research focuses in the development of optical technologies to monitor and image the brain. Ilias and his team from Metabolight develop devices using invisible, harmless near-infrared light to image brain blood volume and oxygen levels which can detect signs of brain injury in newborn babies.

Professor Rebecca Shipley, Director of the UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering, has also been showcased for her work on the Ventura CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) device, a breathing aid that can help keep Covid-19 patients out of intensive care. The device was rapidly developed in just 100 hours by a team from UCL and their collaborators in the first weeks of the pandemic, in which Professor Shipley played a leading role.
