UCL Mechanical Engineering PhD Graduate Dr Wenwen Liu awarded IMarEST Denny Medal

Congratulations to Dr Wenwen Liu, Dr Yuanchang Liu and Professor Richard Bucknall on winning the Denny Medal from the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) for their paper titled “Filtering based multi-sensor data fusion algorithm for a reliable unmanned surface vehicle navigation.”

The paper was acknowledged as the best paper published in the Journal of Marine Engineering and Technology (JMET) from October 2021 to September 2022 for which they were awarded the accolade.

The team’s study, funded by the Atlantic Center for the Innovative Design and Control of Ships (ACCeSS), investigated how navigational information can be improved for unmanned surface vehicles (USV) by developing a new algorithm to detect non-linearity at sea (waves that transform from sinusoidal to a skewed and asymmetric shape).

Leading author of the paper, Dr Wenwen Liu said, "I feel extremely honoured to receive this prestigious award. It recognises deeply the professional training I have undertaken at UCL and the years of hard work I have devoted myself to. With this exceptional achievement from ImarEST, I would like to thank my supervisor, Professor Richard Bucknall and colleague Dr Yuanchang Liu for their continuous guidance and mentorship during my PhD studies.”
