Lu Yao, was one of thrirty one students awarded the 2015 National Award for Outstanding Self-financed Chinese Students Studying Overseas by the Chinese government.
The award ceremony was held at the Chinese Embassy in London where Ambassador Liu Xiaoming congratulated the winners and also expressed gratitude towards their teachers in the UK.
Started in 2003 by China’s Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance, the prize was established to recognise overseas Chinese students with outstanding academic accomplishments. In order to be eligible for the award, a student must be studying for a PhD degree, be under the age of 40 and be self-financing their own education.
Third year Chemistry PhD student, Lu Yao, has developed a paint that can be applied to almost any surface to make a robust, extremely water repellant coating. The findings were published in Science last year and covered by global media.
