UCL Manufacturing Futures Lab
Within the Manufacturing Futures Laboratory (MFL) at UCL East, we will create an innovative facility to support the development of new strategic research, focused on knowledge-based manufacturing to deliver the sustainable products and processes of the future. Details are provided in the MFL fact sheet.
Bringing together core expertise from the UCL Faculty of Engineering Sciences and the UCL Faculty of Mathematical & Physical Sciences, the MFL focuses on knowledge-based and digitally-enabled manufacturing, using technologies such as 3D printing, synthetic biology and biocatalysis, and intensified processing to make both existing and future products cheaper, more effective and more sustainable. The MFL will be a multidisciplinary research hub to underpin the end-to-end production of new products in ways that are smarter, faster and more flexible than currently possible.
Our educational programmes are designed to inspire and train the engineers, chemists and biologists of the future, emphasising hands-on, research-based learning. We are equipping students with the comprehensive future-focused skills they will need to support UK’s success in a new manufacturing era, and drive solutions in a range of critical sectors, from healthcare and energy, to electronics and engineering. The MFL will pioneer taught programmes in sustainable and advanced manufacturing with an emphasis on innovation and enterprise and the wider regulatory environment.
