Meet our Equity Lead (Race), Vilaiwan Fernandes.
I joined UCL in 2018 as a Wellcome Trust-funded Research Fellow within the Division of Biosciences. I am a founding member of the Division of Biosciences’ Race Equity Committee, which aims to promote race equity by fostering dialogue, identifying issues, and initiating new campaigns to catalyse change in all aspects of Divisional life.
As a mixed-race woman who has lived in 3 continents and worked at 5 higher education institutions, I firmly believe that research and innovation require nurturing environments that support diversity and inclusion. Promoting this at UCL is a priority for me, which is why I have taken on the post of FLS Race Equality Lead.
