This four-day course focuses on the product recovery stage of rapid bioprocessing of biological products.
You'll learn about integrated solutions for rapid bioprocessing of biologics and how to select the most suitable recovery operation for your bioprocess.

This course is part of the Modular Training for the Bioprocess Industries programme (MBI®), run by the Department of Biochemical Engineering at UCL.
Course content and structure
Teaching is in small classes, with an emphasis on interactive problem solving and case studies.
Each day will cover the following topics:
- Centrifugation principles and design
- Ultra scale-down of solid-liquid separation operations
- Filtration principles and process performance
- Microfiltration/ultrafiltration operational characteristics
- Pilot-plant and ultra scale-down studies: centrifugation
- Intracellular product release
- Bioprocess application of centrifuges
- Ultra scale-down filtration and cell recovery and membrane separation operations
- Pilot-plant studies: microfiltration
- From lab scale to manufacturing: micro-filtration technologies for product recovery and purification
- Ultra scale-down of conditioning and recovery operations: precipitation, crystallisation and flocculation
- Use of adsorptive depth filtration in biopharmaceutical manufacturing
- Simulation studies: the role of microfiltration in whole bioprocess studies
- Cell engineering to ease primary recovery
- Primary recovery process development with an integrated approach
A social networking event will be held for delegates and speakers.

This course is for scientists and engineers involved in design, development and operation of primary recovery steps and associated steps in upstream and purification processes.

After completing this course you should be able to:
- understand the principles of all the major recovery operations: centrifugation, membrane systems, filtration, cell disruption, precipitation, flocculation
- compare these unit operations for suitability within the process
- determine the most appropriate equipment for separations and specify the right operating conditions
- use the ultra scale-down tool for predicting large-scale separation performance
- understand the interaction among fermentation, recovery and purification and integrated solutions for bioprocess development
