UCL LaSS Library

LaSS Library study room

The UCL Language and Speech Science Library moved back into Chandler House in June 2008 following a two-year refurbishment project. The library - formerly Human Communication Science - has been renamed to reflect the merger of two academic departments to form Language Sciences at UCL, and has incorporated a large part of the Linguistics & Phonetics collections. The whole building has been completely refitted to create an attractive, accessible, comfortable, and efficient 21st century environment for teaching, learning, research and clinical practice.

UCL SSEES Library

As reported in UCL News, the UCL SSEES Library was highly commended in the SCONUL Library Design Awards in December 2007. The Library Design Award, presented every five years by SCONUL, rewards the best new or refurbished higher education libraries in national and university institutions.

UCL Main Library

Refurbishment of the UCL Main Library South Junction was undertaken in summer 2008, in a style similar to that of the refurbishment of the North Junction undertaken in summer 2007. The South Junction now houses Art, History of Art, Economics and Philosophy, plus the remaining Linguistics & Phonetics materials. Following consultation with academic staff, a bid was prepared for improvements to other large spaces at the North Junction which accommodate the English and German collections.

Royal Free Medical Library, UCL Library Services

Refurbishment efforts have produced a noticeable effect on the appearance of the Royal Free Hospital Medical Library. The work includes the replacement of desks and chairs in the Training & Electronic Study Area and elsewhere, and the installation of dividers (to allow for greater privacy in the main study areas) and new current journal issue shelving in the new dedicated educational resources area on the ground floor. The general impression is of a far lighter library, as many surfaces are brighter than ever before. The refurbishments were possible as a result of funding contributions from a number of sources, including the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust and UCL Information Systems.
