Biography

Bristol merchant, partner in Protheroes & Claxton with his son Edward Protheroe senior and Robert Claxton (each of whom q.v.).

  1. Philip Protheroe 'was a Bristol West India merchant and shipowner, in partnership with one Robert Claxton. In 1794 he became a founding partner in the Bristol City Bank (Ireland, Protheroe & Co.). By the time of his death, 30 Aug. 1803, he had acquired landed property in Gloucestershire, as well as in his ancestral counties of Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, and in his will made cash bequests in excess of £112,000. Edward Protheroe [senior’s] share was £20,000, plus real estate in the vicinity of Bristol and a small property at Westbury-on-Trym. The Welsh property was divided between his younger brothers Sir Henry (knighted 16 Mar. 1803), Philip and Lewis (a minor), who in addition received sums of £3,000 [by a codicil] , £25,000 and £10,000 respectively.'

  2. Will of Philip Protheroe of Bristol [and of Over in the parish of Almondsbury Gloucestershire] proved 16/09/1803. Under the will, in addition to the legacies summarised above, he left £10,000 and an annuity of £500 p.a. to his wife Mary in addition to the provisions of their marriage settlement, which he confirmed. He placed £22,000 in trust to pay the income to his daughter Elizabeth Barker the wife of William Barker for life and then to her children; and a further £22,000 for the benefit of his daughter Sarah Vaughan for life and then to her children. his residuary legatees were his sons Edward and Philip as tenants-in-common.
