Biography

Sheriff of Bristol 1802 and 1807, and of Monmouthshire 1817. knighted in 1803. With William John Struth (q.v.) he invested in land and enslaved people on St Vincent in the early 1800s; he was also a coal proprietor in Monmouthshire.

  1. Under a deed of 14/01/1804, James Bruce leased to William John Struth and Henry Protheroe 45 named enslaved people (appraised at £2650) for 3 years at £312 p.a.
