Biography

Mary Breakenridge née Breakenridge, wife of John Breakenridge (q.v.), inherited a share of enslaved persons in Port Royal, Jamaica, from her brothers Thomas and William (both q.v.), the compensation for which was awarded to her attorney Charles Harvey (q.v.).

  1. Born in Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland, and baptised 19/10/1792, to John Breakenridge (provision merchant, died 1800 age 49) and Mary Langwill (died 1796 age 39). Her older brothers Thomas and William both owned enslaved persons in Port Royal and were both deceased by 1835. The original claims were made by Peter Breakenridge, son of Thomas - but Mary, her husband also called John, her sister Isabella Breakenridge and niece Eliza Ann Cordiner counterclaimed as legatees of Thomas and William.

  2. “John Brakenridge Farmer Killeonan and Mary Brakenridge daughter of the deceased John Brakenridge late Mercht. Campbeltown, both of this Parish, married 8th July [1816]."
