Professor Dame Hazel Genn delivers the Sir Zelman Cowen Oration

24 November 2017

Hazel Cowen Oration

Professor Dame Hazel Genn, Director of the UCL Centre for Access to Justice (CAJ), delivered the second Annual Sir Zelman Cowen Oration at the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre in Melbourne, Australia, on 1 November 2017.

The oration explored the meaning of access to justice in a citizen-centred justice system and described the potential for further change in the sector as “breathtaking”.

Dame Hazel considered the potential and challenges of online courts and tribunals for access to justice and highlighted the value of integrating free legal advice services with health and other community services as a means of reaching vulnerable groups.

She provided the example of UCL’s Centre for Access to Justice which has established a student legal advice clinic  integrated within a GP practice in Newham.

Staffed by UCL Laws students under the supervision of experienced and qualified advisers and lawyers, the clinic enables members of the local community to access free general legal advice on socio-legal issues such as housing, employment or welfare problems.
