Fiona Strawbridge

Meet Fiona Strawbridge, Director of Digital Education and Portfolio Lead for Education.

Fiona Strawbridge
About Fiona

First coming to campus as a University of London Master’s student in 1988, Fiona enjoyed the time she’d spent studying at UCL and returned to the institution following her PhD at Bristol, formally joining the institution as a postdoc at the UCL department of Space and Climate Physics.

The latter provided her with her first experience of leadership – of a field campaign in a remote part of the Australian desert.

In 1994, Fiona left UCL for a six-year stint at Bath Spa University where she led a degree programme in Remote Sensing and GIS. Fiona rejoined UCL in 2000 and established the Digital Education team in 2002 – leading it ever since.

Once a pocket-sized team focusing on the Virtual Learning Environment, Digital Education has evolved into a large multi-functional group that now includes educational media, digital assessment and digital accessibility.

Fiona’s team has played a pivotal role in UCL’s pivot to connected learning during the pandemic, and, later, in the shift to hybrid modes. Currently, Fiona is leading on the institutional response to generative AI.

Outside work, Fiona lives with her teenage daughter in London – but also escapes as often as she can to Lyme Regis, where she swims in the sea for as much of the year as her cold-prone fingers and toes will allow.
