19 March 2024

Congratulations to IoO students Svetlana Smolina and Lilya Matsumoto for reaching semi-finals in Mayor's Entrepreneur Competition 2024 in London.

Svetlana Smolina

The Mayor's Fund for London is a politically independent charity which champions opportunities for young Londoners from low-income backgrounds and diverse communities across the capital. This year, there are awards across four different categories: Creative Industries, Environment, Health, and Tech.

The Mayor's Entrepreneur Programme aims to create growth that makes London cleaner, greener and ready for the future; and to ensure students see entrepreneurship as a viable career path and get the skills they need to succeed.

Svetlana Smolina is the project leader working with two other UCL students: Lilya Matsumoto, also on the MSc Bioscience Innovation and Enterprise, and Muhammad Abdullah Tariq, on the BSc Management Science. Their project idea is a patient allocation system designed for A&E departments.

As a medical doctor Svetlana decided to make a career shift and help people develop innovations and translating them into real life. That’s what led her to apply for the Bioscience Innovation and Enterprise MSc at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. Before coming to London, Svetlana ran a volunteer organization and was involved in science and practical medicine, which she hopes will help her in her entrepreneurial endeavors in the sphere of healthcare and biotech.
