Our new Associate Professor (Teaching) in Orthoptics
30 January 2024
Congratulations to Dipesh Patel who joined us as Associate Professor (Teaching) in Orthoptics on 1 January.
Dipesh E Patel worked as a Senior Orthoptist in Bath before joining UCL Great Ormond Street (GOS) Institute of Child Health (ICH) in 2012. He undertook his PhD at the ICH (2012-2016), investigating optimal methods for assessing visual fields in children with glaucoma and neuro-ophthalmic disease.
In 2018, Dipesh was awarded a HEE NCEL Fellowship, and in 2019 secured a CLAHRC Fellowship to investigate the effect of age on occlusion therapy outcomes in children aged 4-16 years. In 2020, Dipesh was awarded an NIHR Advanced Fellowship to investigate low vs. high intensity occlusion therapy for the management of mild/moderate amblyopia - the only Orthoptist in the current to hold such an award.
Dipesh is Programme Director for the HCPC-accredited Orthoptics MSc (pre-registration) at UCL IOO (2020-current), leading a team of 13 staff to deliver the UK's first dedicated graduate-entry Orthoptic programme.
In 2023, Dipesh authored the 'Curriculum Framework for Pre-registration Orthoptic Education and Training', setting the standard for Orthoptic education and training across the UK. He also leads NHSE-funded work exploring integrated simulated learning for practice-based Orthoptic education, in collaboration with national partners.
Dipesh holds Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and is the Orthoptist Principal - Research and Audit Lead at Moorfields Eye Hospital
