21 September 2023

A global review of the current research on glaucoma was published today.

Determination of intraocular pressure and differentiation between open angle and angle closure glaucoma.

A team led by researchers at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO) and Moorfields Eye Hospital put together a comprehensive review of the current research on glaucoma, one of the leading causes of blindness. The review was published in the Lancet today. It summarises the evidence for existing treatments for glaucoma, and those in development, together with the authors' thoughts on the most promising areas for future research. The lead author is Dr Hari Jayaram, Honorary Associate Clinical Professor at our institute, with Gus Gazzard, Professor of Glaucoma Studies at our institute as senior author.

Glaucoma is the name given to a group of progressive optic neuropathies that are currently irreversible. It is estimated that 95 million people worldwide have glaucoma, with around 10 million having already lost the sight of at least one eye.
