New Deputy Theme Lead of Population and Data Science at the IoO

28 March 2022

Congratulations to Dr Nikolas Pontikos for being appointed as Deputy Theme Lead for the IoO's Population and Data Science theme.

Pontikos

Each Theme has a primary Theme Lead and a Deputy Theme Lead. Dr Pontikos will work with Professor Paul Foster to develop the research strategy for this theme, aligning it with the overall research strategy at the IoO. The appointment will run from 1 April 2022 until 31 August 2024.

The Theme Lead and Deputy Theme Lead positions are unremunerated academic leadership roles recognised in the UCL senior promotions and professorial re-banding processes.

Dr Pontikos said:

I am delighted to take on the post of deputy theme lead for Population and Data Sciences, working with Professor Paul Foster for the next 3 years. I look forward to contributing to this highly collaborative research theme by helping to build new bridges and strengthening existing ones between our institute, Moorfields Eye Hospital, as well as with other departments and partners. From gaining novel insights into molecular mechanisms to influencing clinical practice, to developing the latest sight-saving treatments or diagnostic algorithms, data science has the potential to permeate all research activities at our institute. Hence I very much look forward to expanding the reach of our theme through new types of interdisciplinary collaborations and the development of novel training programmes to increase our data science skills.
Another focus will be around special interest groups and building infrastructure to support our data science research, following from the great work of Dr Adam Dubis. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or thoughts regarding computing, data storage and management, or more generally, data science.
