25 September 2019
New role to support the Vice Provost (Education and Student Affairs), providing academic leadership to transform the experience of graduate students.
Nora Colton, Joint Director of Education at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital and Professor of Global Vision and Eye Health Education, is to take up the role of Pro-Vice-Provost (Postgraduate Education) in the Office of the Vice Provost (Education and Student Affairs).
This newly created role sits alongside that of Pro-Vice-Provost (Digital Education), held by Professor Norbert Pachler of UCL Institute of Education and Pro-Vice-Provost (Student Experience), held by Professor Deborah Gill, Director of UCL Medical School.
Professor Colton will work alongside Professor Anthony Smith, Vice Provost (Education and Student Affairs), acting as an institutional champion for graduate education and helping to accelerate the transformation of the experience we offer to our students.
A Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Professor Colton has extensive experience of teaching and learning not only as a Professor of Economics, but as a senior leader in higher education.
As Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of East London, she introduced a Centre for Student Success which combined student support and careers in one student facing centre, as well as Global Scholars and London Scholars programmes to enhance student engagement.
More recently she has deployed e-learning solutions and simulation learning in her health education work at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital.
Professor Smith said: "I am very glad to welcome Nora to the education leadership team. She brings a wealth of expertise and insight to the role that will help enhance postgraduate education across UCL."
Professor Colton said: “The changing socio-economic landscape globally prompts universities to rethink the way postgraduate education is provided. In this new role, I will be supporting the UCL leadership and community to strengthen our postgraduate offering in order to enhance the intellectually rewarding experience postgraduate students receive at UCL.
I am really excited to help shape how we will ensure that our students at UCL are equipped to meet the needs of the future. I look forward to working with academic and professional services colleagues, as well as our student body, to make UCL a fantastic place to study.”
Professor Andrew Dick, Director of the Institute of Ophthalmology, said: "This appointment is such welcome news for UCL, IoO and Moorfields. Nora is an inspirational educator with a tremendous passion for successful student outcomes and a great educational environment. She brings a wealth of experience working with students and academics to deliver new methods of education and develop courses that meet the needs and expectations of our students and for future employers and society at large."
