The G20 is a yearlong process, whereby policy briefs are prepared and, if approved by a meeting of 40 heads of state in the summer, included in a formal G20 communique. The IOE has had four policy briefs published over the past two years.
Paul Grainger attended the first round meeting of this year’s Think20 (T20) cycle. The T20 is a network of research institutes and think tanks from the G20 countries, who provide evidence-based policy recommendations to the G20 leaders.
Task forces within the T20 are currently working on issues such as regulating the use of data and artificial intelligence. Paul Grainger’s task force is looking at the future of work.
Mr Grainger will look at two strands within this. He will consider what the nature of work will be when artificial intelligence takes over on a broad range of tasks; and what the nature of employment and the implications for education and social inclusion will be.
Paul Grainger said: “Already the world is seeing a shift from formal employment towards platform engagement, gig workers, network employment and a shift towards micro businesses and self-employment.
"This year I shall be working with Paul Little, CEO of City of Glasgow College and an Honorary Fellow of UCL, on the implications of a shift from hierarchies to systems. We hope to have a Policy Brief ready for the next round in April.”
