Turin: All-Cause Mortality

In Turin, there were 133,161 deaths from all causes over the study period (2000 - 2008).  This figure consists of 64,702 male deaths and 68,459 female deaths and is based on data from the Turin Mortality Registry.

High sSMRs for all-cause mortality are concentrated in Northern Turin, as shown by the predominance of brown coloured areas in these maps.  Excess mortality in Northern Turin coincides with the high levels of deprivation measured by socio-economic indicators in the region.  Whilst low sSMRs (shown in green tones) are dispersed throughout the city, there is a concentration of areas with deficits in all-cause mortality risk in central and Southern areas of Western Turin (located to the West of the Po River).  Areas on the Eastern bank of the Po River exhibit low sSMRs among men, but not among women.  This coincides with the maps of socio-economic indicators which reveal that Eastern Turin is largely affluent.  These gender differences suggest that socio-economic affluence may be associated with a reduced risk of all-cause mortality among men, but not among women.
