The Department of Health has announced £5 million of funding for a new 5-year Obesity Policy Research Unit at University College London. It will give independent advice to policy makers and analysts, and develop understanding on the causes of childhood obesity, looking at social inequalities, the early years of childhood, and marketing to children and families.

The Unit is led by Professor Russell Viner from UCL's GOS Institute of Child Health, but BSH are providing one of the four work streams. This will be led by Professor Andrew Steptoe supported by Dr Clare Llewellyn, Dr Abi Fisher and Dr Helen Croker, with new research staff joining the Obesity Research Group. It will provide an excellent opportunity to increase the policy impact of BSH's childhood obesity work.
