National Apprenticeship Week 5-9 February 2024

To showcase and celebrate the positive impact, accomplishments and benefits apprentices bring to UCL, our local community and the wider economy, we are offering a range of skills webinars and information sessions to support the professional development of UCL staff.

To mark National Apprenticeship Week, which is focussed on the theme of ‘Skills for Life’, we encourage everyone to consider how apprenticeships can help you to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career. As well as running a series of events showcasing and celebrating the positive impact, accomplishments and benefits apprentices bring to UCL, our local community and the wider economy, we are offering a range of webinars to support the professional development of UCL staff. There is no need to register. We look forward to seeing you there!

UCL East: Informal drop-in

Monday 5 February | 13:30 - 16:30 | Staff Refectory, 7th Floor, Marshgate UCL East

This event is open to staff at UCL East wanting to know more about apprenticeships, ask any questions and have a conversation with the Apprenticeship Manager and current apprentices. There’s no need to attend for the whole duration; simply show up on the day at a time that suits you. There is also an opportunity to meet with one of our training providers to find out more about potential programmes and speak with the Technical Staff Programme Manager. 

London and Southeast Round Table Discussion

Tuesday 6 February | 14:30 - 15:30 | Online Event

This roundtable brings together apprentices, managers and mentors from London and South HEI’s to share their experiences. This is an opportunity for individuals to find out about the benefits of apprenticeships to the learner, departments and organisations and how they can support career growth. Attendees will participate and contribute to improving their understanding of how to grow professional development opportunities whilst building strong links and promoting cross-institution networking. No need to register. An Apprenticeship First Approach to Recruitment

Wednesday 7 February | 10:00 - 11:00 | Online event

Curious to learn about how an apprenticeship-first approach can help support recruitment in your teams to achieve sustainable growth? This session is aimed at hiring managers that are looking for tools to support succession planning through entry level recruitment. You will hear from Organisational Development Apprenticeship Managers, Uzma Sadiq and Paula Sandamas, who will explain what an apprenticeship is, how they can transform careers, and your department. Using an Apprenticeship for Your Professional Development

Whether you’re looking to accelerate your career or considering a change of direction, this insight session is a great way to explore where an apprenticeship could take you. It will help you gain an understanding of apprenticeships and identify upcoming and appropriate opportunities to inform career conversations, appraisals and upskilling. Mentoring a Colleague in the Workplace 

Thursday 8 February | 10:00 - 11:30 | Online event

A workshop delivered by Hawk Training in partnership with UCL. For managers and mentors from London and South HEI’s looking to enhance their mentoring skills to effectively support colleagues in the workplace.

This interactive and insightful event will provide a unique opportunity to enhance your mentoring skills, share experiences, and contribute to the growth of both your team and your organisation. In this session, you'll gain a deep understanding of the principles of mentoring. Your participation will make a meaningful impact on the journey of those seeking guidance from you.

Question Time: Ask the Technical Apprentice

Friday 9 February | 10:00 - 11:00 | Online event

This Question Time, hosted by UCL, brings together Technical Apprentices from a range of HEIs who are signed up to the National Technical commitment. The event's keynote speaker is Tom Cheek (Science Council), and the panel includes Farazarn Riaz (Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering, UCL) alongside current and former apprentices from the technical community (Surrey, Reading, Southampton and Imperial). Data and IT Skills Session

A range of workshops have been designed by one of our training providers Just IT. As well as general information sessions, there will be skills taster sessions covering topics such as PowerBI and Data cleaning. Insight sessions for Multi-Channel Marketer Apprenticeship and other IT apprenticeships provide an overview of some of the programmes on offer. Please note that these are open events.
