Call for Proposals to Develop an Early Career Network on Critical Global Health

27 July 2023

Calling ECR/PGR scholars: The GCGH Critical Global Health Initiative seeks to facilitate the creation of an interdisciplinary Early Career Network on Critical Global Health. Scholars working critically on questions of health are invited to apply for leadership of this initiative.

Global Health

Following the success of our recent Symposium on Critical Global Health - jointly hosted by the UCL Institute for Advanced Studies, Grand Challenges and Social and Historical Sciences - the Critical Global Health working group seeks to support the establishment of an interdisciplinary Early Career Network on Critical Global Health.

We are inviting applications from early career researchers (including postgraduate students) in any discipline(s) to propose a steering group of 4-6 people that will form the basis of an early career network (ECN) that will critically consider the empirical, theoretical and/or practical dimensions of global health.

This CGH ECN will build on conversations begun during the symposium, with the aim of building UCL-wide conversations and exchange on CGH, ultimately leading to the development of collaborative research proposals, interdisciplinary research outputs and the planning and delivering of seminars, conferences and or public engagement activities.

Network activities might, for example, speak to critical genealogies of health and ill-health; historical and colonial aspects of health and health inequities; discursive framings of health; critical geopolitics or economics of health; intersections between health and other social, infrastructural or environmental issues; ethical and practical dimensions of critical health research and collaboration; critical health research methods and positionality; and/or the role of institutions and researchers in perpetuating or alleviating global health inequities.

The ECN will be jointly hosted by SHS Health, Mind and Society and the Institute for Advanced Studies, with parallel support from senior academics across Social and Historical Sciences and the Institute for Global Health.

Various funding sources have been identified to support this network. Applications to calls run by Grand Challenges will be encouraged and supported, and additional sources of funding will be made available for specific events and meetings.

The Network will be provided with:

  • HMS and IAS website presence
  • Support with publicity for events
  • Guidance on sources of funding
  • Advisory group of senior academics able to input into writing and applications

Proposals from small groups of ECR/PGR researchers are invited. These should cover the following in up to 1,000 words:

  1. Outline of your vision for the network
  2. Names, affiliations, and research interests of each applicant
  3. Proposed strategy for developing a UCL-wide network
  4. Plan for 12 months activities for the Network
  5. Outputs: dissemination activities and or publications
  6. Outline how these activities might support or relate to the Grand Challenges of Climate Crisis and/or Mental Health and Wellbeing.

There are no pre-requisites for participation in the steering group and participation in previous events is not essential.

Applications should be submitted to z.paskett@ucl.ac.uk by Friday 29 September 2023.
