Following a joint funding call from the UCL Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS), UCL Cities Partnerships Programme and Université Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL), UCL and PSL academics will launch four new projects.

The funds will support early- and mid-career researchers leading projects ranging from multi-disciplinary studies on living in outer space to summer schools on the inner life of consciousness. The successful proposals are set to receive funding of up to £30,000 over three years.

Professor Nicola Miller, Director of the IAS, said: “It’s very good to see such inspiring interdisciplinary research projects arising from the IAS collaboration with PSL, through UCL's Cities Partnerships Programme. We were delighted to receive such high-quality applications. As a forum for intellectual exchange across the disciplines, the IAS will work with our colleagues in Paris to ensure that the joint projects are supported as well as possible. There are great opportunities here for real intellectual breakthroughs.”

One of the funding recipients, Dr David Jeevendrampillai (UCL Anthropology), said: “We are delighted to be awarded funding for The Off Earth Atlas. Led by anthropologists, this project will consider life in outer space in many different and exciting ways – from what biological definitions of life are to the social relations that come about in outer space. Through workshops, a multimedia website and a high-grade publication, The Off Earth Atlas will strengthen the international collaboration between UCL and PSL in this growing field of research.”

Founded in 2010, Université PSL includes eleven of Paris’s most well-known grandes écoles and grands établissements as its component-schools, among which are the École Normale Supérieure - PSL, Collège de France and the Observatoire de Paris - PSL. It is the most highly ranked university in France according to the QS and Times Higher Education rankings for 2021.
