Professor Dame Hazel Genn appointed as UCL Vice-Provost (International)
30 July 2020
Professor Dame Hazel Genn will succeed Dame Nicola Brewer in the role of Vice-Provost (International) from 17 August 2020
Professor Dame Hazel Genn, Professor of Socio-Legal Studies at UCL Laws and Director of the UCL Centre for Access to Justice, has been appointed as UCL Vice-Provost (International & Advancement).
This follows Dame Nicola Brewer’s decision to step down in September and shift to a non-executive career, after serving for over six years as Vice-Provost (International), and more recently supporting the Office of the Vice-Provost (Advancement) during Lori Houlihan’s absence due to ill health and then retirement.
As Vice-Provost (International), Dame Nicola has led on the development and implementation of the Global Engagement Strategy (GES), setting out how UCL would deliver greater global impact: by working with partners to achieve fairer solutions to global challenges. The GES reached its five-year milestone this year.
UCL Council approved the proposal for Dame Hazel’s appointment as Vice-Provost (International & Advancement) on 9 July 2020 on an interim basis, pending a permanent recruitment process to be instituted in due course.
Since the beginning of April 2020, Dame Hazel has been serving at UCL senior management level, leading on Public Affairs for the Provost. Her previous service as Pro-Vice-Provost (Alumni) from 2017-2020 and Pro-Vice-Provost (International) from 2019-2020 will be invaluable in taking forward these two critical areas of UCL activity.
The Global Engagement Office wishes Dame Nicola every success in her next steps and looks forward to welcoming Dame Hazel to the team in her new Vice-Provost role.
