Short and Taster Courses

IGH offers a variety of modules for health professionals seeking to develop skills and knowledge with short (non-assessed) or taster (for credit/assessment) professional development courses.

Short courses

Short courses are aimed at health professionals seeking non-assessed professional development for which they receive a certificate of attendance, upon completion of the course.  Most of the courses are modules shared with the MSc programmes - check the individual course pages for details.

Taster courses

The IGH taster programme provides an excellent method of giving health professionals the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills.

The taster courses are all modules from MSc programmes (see list below). They provide potential future IGH MSc students the opportunity to experience teaching within the department before applying to a full MSc. Unlike short courses, if you are successful in completing the taster course, including passing the course assessment, you will earn UCL credits which can be transferred to a UCL MSc programme within the given time frame (via submitting an Accreditation of Prior Learning application when applying to the UCL MSc programme).

What are the differences between short and taster courses?

Participants who successfully complete a short course at IGH receive a certificate of attendance, but as they are not assessed they do not receive UCL credit.

Participants who successfully complete an IGH taster course and pass the assessment at the first attempt receive a Grade Report and are eligible to receive UCL credit. Taster credits must be applied to a postgraduate programme within 5 academic years of taking the taster course.

There is also a difference in fees between the two types of courses with taster courses being £100 more than short courses. Our application/entry requirements for taster courses are also more rigorous.

Our courses can be taken as either short or taster courses, and both types of study involve attending all of the teaching, practical activities and any group work related to the course.

Short and taster students can use UCL computers and have reference access to library material. E-resources (e.g. journals) can be accessed via UCL computers and e-access computers on library sites.
