Kristin M. Bakke is Professor of Political Science and International Relations at UCL. She leads the GGI research thematic on Global Security.
Kristin M. Bakke is Professor in Political Science and International Relations and a member of the Conflict & Change research cluster at the UCL Department for Political Science. She is also an Associate Research Professor at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).
Prior to joining UCL in 2009, Professor Bakke was an Assistant Professor in political science at Leiden University and a post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard University. She holds a PhD and MA in political science from the University of Washington, Seattle, and a BA in journalism and political science from Indiana University, Bloomington.
Professor Bakke is an Associate Editor at Journal of Peace Research and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Global Security Studies and the advisory board of Nations and Nationalism. She sits on the council of the British Conflict Research Society.
Focusing on political violence, Professor Bakke’s research explores post-war state-building, how states respond to opposition within their borders, the dynamics of violence in self-determination struggles, and geopolitical attitudes. She draws on both quantitative and qualitative methods in her work, including surveys and fieldwork—in Northern Ireland, India, Guatemala, Canada, and the post-Soviet states and de facto states.
