Online Public Crime Mapping: Public Usefulness and Trust Perceptions

An extension of Artemis Skarlatidou's EngD research and methodological framework in the context of online public crime mapping

The aim was to provide a solution, which improves the perceived usefulness and trustworthiness of these applications so that people can make well-informed decisions with respect to their individual crime prevention strategies.

Using mainly Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) methods and tools the user needs and expectations were identified with respect to the crime information that should be provided (at different scales) but also how this information should be presented. A set of novel crime geo-visualisations were further developed which consider privacy issues but also improve public trust and usefulness.
