In the last decade, feminism has gained increasing attention in China and East Asia more broadly. This has not only heightened awareness of gender discrimination but also generated fierce debates. Simultaneously, a growing body of scholarship and discussions sheds new light on the diverse experiences, strategies, and contexts that the term ‘Chinese feminism’ encompasses. In the wake of decolonising initiatives and black feminism, critical reflections on Chinese feminism highlight the need to listen to feminists working in local Chinese contexts, theoretical articulations in the Chinese language, and how feminism in contemporary China draws upon transnational collaboration and historical Chinese sources of thought and practice. Rather than define what Chinese feminism is, we pose it as a question that is broadly shaped by the twin dimensions of theory and experience. Staff and students of Chinese heritage at UCL will take turns speaking from their own viewpoints and subject areas.

The event will be held in English. All welcome.

This event is part of SELCS-CMII’s ongoing work on promoting Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in the department.
