European Literary Map

The European Institute has been awarded a Knowledge Exchange grant to support and facilitate external engagement relating to the European Literary Map of London and the underpinning software Memory Mapper - developed by Dr Duncan Hay.

The grant will enable technical work to enhance the map's functionality and will promote engagement with end users, from European cultural institutes to schools, to develop ideas for future collaborative projects. It will also support a the opening reception for the upcoming European Institute exhibition based on the map, 'Lost and Found: A European Literary Map of London', which is expected to launch in the South Cloisters in October 2023.

What is the UCL European Literary Map of London?

The UCL European Literary Map of London is an interactive online map that acts as a guide to the city of London through the eyes of Europe’s literary, musical, artistic and scientific minds.

The first version of the map was created by the UCL European Institute for the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Welcome Season in 2020. It comprised 50 entries in 16 languages, describing different sites and experiences of London in text, painting, moving image or song. The updated version of the map is currently under development, following the call for contributions earlier in 2023.
