Nomi Claire Lazar joins the European Institute as a Visiting Academic

Prof. Nomi Claire Lazar has joined the European Institute and UCL Laws.

Nomi Claire Lazar, Full Professor of Politics in the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa, has joined the European Institute until the end of July 2022 as a Visiting Professor. 

Professor Lazar is an expert on emergency politics and the politics of time. While at UCL, she will be working on a theory of apocalyptic politics. Specifically, she will investigate European extremist movements' use apocalyptic rhetoric, and the threat this can pose to constitutional regimes.

In addition to her teaching and research at Ottawa, Professor Lazar currently serves as an elected member of the University’s Board of Governors, and previously taught at the University of Chicago, Yale, and Yale-NUS College in Singapore.

With an interdisciplinary training in political science, legal theory, and philosophy, Professor Lazar’s scholarship explores the nexus of emergency and political crisis, legitimacy, and temporality. She is also actively involved in civil society, advocating for prisoners’ rights and running polling stations for Canadians elections. Before her PhD, Professor Lazar worked for Justice Canada on the Youth Criminal Justice Act, and as a regulatory policy consultant with A.T. Kearney.
