Reforms are Too Important to be Left to Reformers

Join us for the launch of a new book, 'The Political Economy of Structural Reforms in Europe', edited by Nauro F. Campos, Paul De Grauwe and Yuemei Ji, and published by Oxford University Press. This event is hosted by the UCL European Institute.

Since the financial crisis of 2007-08, we have been hearing incessantly from policy makers in Europe that structural reforms are the key to higher growth rates and to economic recovery. As a result, many countries in Europe have introduced more flexibilities in labour and product markets generating different results in economic growth. However, public support in Europe for introducing more liberalizing reforms has reached a limit. Economists have been the major force arguing for more liberalized market-based economies. In this book, we reflect on these important issues in great detail.

During this event we will discuss the following topics with the audience:

• What are the determinants of structural reforms in each countries?
• What are the short and long-term effects of these reforms?
• What are the political limits for further structural reforms?

The event will consist of two sessions: each speaker will give a short presentation, followed by a discussion with the audience.
