Education involves not only learning but also unlearning. “Decolonization” is a popular buzzword for change, but what does that mean for your education in the wake of Black Lives Matter? How does a discipline end up disciplining forms of knowledge and skills? In this roundtable led by Professor Paul Gilroy (UCL Sarah Parker Remond Centre for the Study of Race and Racialisation) several academics will discuss how their research engages the historical legacies of their fields shaped by racism, colonialism, and other ongoing structural oppressions.
This is an opportunity to reflect on the past, present, and future of your chosen discipline. Faculty will share visions for transformation in our institutions and how students can be participants and leaders in changes at UCL and beyond. Departments represented include the School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS), Information Studies, Greek & Latin, and Hebrew & Jewish Studies.
