This single-stage phase II trial tested the feasibility of using Patient Navigation, an intervention that offers support to patients to overcome barriers to healthcare, to increase Bowel Scope Screening uptake within a socially deprived area in England. Patient Navigation involved non-attenders receiving a phone call from a Specialist Screening Practitioner who elicited reasons for non-attendance and offered educational, practical and emotional support as needed. We recorded the number of participants in the Patient Navigation group who re-booked and attended their BSS appointment. A qualitative analysis of the Patient Navigation transcripts, and interviews with the Specialist Screening Practitioners, was conducted, alongside a quantitative analysis of completed patient-reported experience questionnaires.
Trial registration number: ISRCTN13314752
