Webinar - Management of post-disaster relief, recovery and reconstruction after Türkiye Earthquake
28 June 2023
This talk will consider the post-disaster stages of relief, response and recovery (RRR) after the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes in Turkey, drawing on the work of The Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT), a group of 28 engineering professionals and academics.
This talk will consider the post-disaster stages of relief, response and recovery (RRR) after the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes in Turkey, drawing on the work of The Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT), a group of 28 engineering professionals and academics that conduct field investigations following major earthquakes. Half of the team members visited Türkiye in mid-March, five weeks after the earthquakes, and two follow-up missions of smaller teams have been conducted since then. The EEFIT mission members looked at seismology, geotechnics, structures, infrastructure, and remote sensing. The EEFIT work is based on a hybrid model of online research and field studies. The RRR work is strongly qualitative in methodology and the talk will discuss the employed research methods. We will discuss what has happened after the 2023 earthquakes, covering topics related the relief, response, recovery and reconstruction stages, including casualties, search and rescue, economic losses, emergency and temporary sheltering, migration, debris removal, medical response, recovery of education, historical and cultural impacts, housing and urban recovery. Please join us in learning about the Turkiye and the impact the earthquakes have had on the built environment, infrastructure and communities and to understand the complexities of recovery from these tragic earthquakes. Presenters’ biography
Yasemin Aktas, PhD
CEGE, University College London
Dr Yasemin D Aktas is a lecturer in applied materials and structures at UCL Dept of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering. She is an elected member of ISTRUCTE's Earthquake Engineering Field Team (EEFIT) and the mission co-lead to the 2023 Turkiye Earthquakes. AS a structural and conservation engineer by training her research is particularly focussed on traditional and other heritage building typologies, synergies between climatic hazards and seismic vulnerability, earthquake response and early reconstruction efforts, among others.
Cassidy Johnson, PhD
Bartlett Development Planning Unit, UCL
Cassidy Johnson is Professor of Urbanism and Disaster Risk Reduction at the Bartlett Development Planning Unit, UCL. She has been a member of the EEFIT mission for the 2023 Turkey earthquake sequence, focusing on Relief, Recovery and Reconstruction. Her academic interests are linked by a commitment to improve the quality of life and livelihoods of low-income groups living in urban areas. This has encompassed issues of urban planning, housing quality, building code regulations, informal settlements (and upgrading) and evictions. Her work engages internationally with policy makers as well as with local communities and she has worked across Asia and Africa, including Turkey, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi. She has undertaken many research projects with local and international partners related to disaster risks, adaptation, and participatory urban development, and regularly acts as advisor to UK Research Councils, United Nations Office for Disaster Reduction, The World Bank and others.
Ali Tolga Özden, PhD
Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University
Dr. Ali Tolga Özden is Associate Professor at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University in Turkey, where he has been working since 2015. His research interests include architectural design, housing policies, disaster studies, disaster risk management, post-disaster reconstruction, building inspection and continuing professional training programs. He serves as a member in several organisations such as, Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board of Gelibolu (Gallipoli) Wars Historical Area, Çanakkale, Turkey (board member), EERI (affiliate member), Disaster, Conflict and Social Crisis Research Network, Chamber of Architects of Turkey etc.
