Global symposium on recent advancements and the way forward in confined masonry construction
3 December 2023
This workshop is to facilitate knowledge exchange between countries with ample experience of confined masonry practice, and countries where this technology is currently being promoted and the development of the design codes is in progress or has not yet started.
Confined masonry (CM) construction consists of masonry walls confined by reinforced concrete (RC) tie-columns and RC tie-beams. If built correctly, confined masonry buildings have performed very well in past earthquakes. Even though CM technology is being practiced for almost a century in some countries, mainly in the Latin America, construction practice in other seismically active regions of the world has not been standardised yet, and in many countries this technology has not been practiced. In this context, this workshop presents a unique opportunity to bring together experts and practitioners from around the globe to examine the current status, in terms of field applications and variations in construction practices, research and design codes, and to identify potential gaps, which could be addressed by future research studies and implemented in practice. The workshop will run online over two days, with invited speakers from several countries presenting relevant topics and contributing to panel discussions. The objective of the workshop is to facilitate knowledge exchange between countries with ample experience of confined masonry practice, and countries where this technology is currently being promoted and the development of the design codes is in progress or has not yet started. |
