Area of research/academic interests
Giulia Trabacchin joined EPICentre when she started her PhD at UCL in 2017. The project investigates an innovative and sustainable building material: geopolymer concrete reinforced with basalt FRP bars. Made by recycling industrial waste, geopolymer concrete allows to reduce the CO2 emissions related to cement production. Basalt FRP, produced from natural rocks, are also environmentally friendly. The non-corrosive properties of the bars reduce the costs related to structural maintenance and enhance the building life. The research is focused on the bond behaviour between BFRP bars and the surrounding concrete, critical aspect for the structural performance of the elements.
She is a civil engineer, specialized in structures, graduated in 2016 at University of Study of Padua, Italy. She won two Erasmus scholarships that allowed her to study at Escuela Politécnica Superior de la Universidad de Alicante, Spain, and École Nationale des Travaux Publics de l'État, France. In 2018, she was awarded a British Council - China Scholarship Council grant and spent a four-months visiting period at Wuhan Univesity of Technology, China.
