EPICentre Seminars - Probabilistic Optimization of Seismically Excited Cable-Stayed Bridges

24 March 2021, 12:00 pm–1:00 pm

Due to their high flexibility, low inherent damping and strong nonlinear behaviour, cable-stayed bridges are vulnerable to earthquakes and should therefore be carefully designed to achieve the prescribed performance objectives. Fragility functions can aid the design process, providing probabilistic information on seismic behaviour and leading to more sustainable solutions. However, they require a significant computational effort. The seminar discusses how parameterized fragility functions, which are obtained through machine learning techniques, can be implemented for quicker, yet highly reliable, investigation of design alternatives and for the optimization of a cable-stayed bridges.

Andrea is a second-year PhD student at UCL. His research focuses on the multi-hazard analysis and optimization of cable-stayed bridges, considering the interaction between earthquake and fatigue. He holds a Double MSc in Structural Engineering from the University of Trento and Tongji University (同济大学). Before joining UCL, Andrea worked for a year as Research Assistant in the field of seismic metamaterials and did a structural design internship at the East China Architectural Design & Research Institute.
