Distributed energy resources (DERs) are expected to increase the resilience of power systems to natural disasters by introducing multiple power-generation and -storage units close to the users. This presentation will show the findings of evaluating the increase in post-disaster power accessibility spurred by the rapid adoption of DERs after earthquakes and hurricanes. First, the presentation will focus on a proposed methodology that quantifies power generation from microgrids and households with rooftop solar panels after earthquakes. This part will include an application to San Carlos, California, highlighting the need for solar adoption policies that help the most vulnerable neighborhoods. Second, the presentation will focus on a methodology to quantify solar generation during hurricanes. The application of this methodology covers the entire East Coast of the United States and highlights hotspots where solar generation is at the highest risk. These projects lay the groundwork for evaluating the resilience benefits of modern power systems.

About the Speaker

Dr Luis Ceferino

Assistant Professor at New York University / Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton University

Luis Ceferino is an incoming Assistant Professor at the Civil and Urban Engineering Department and the Center for Urban Science and Progress at New York University. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton University, where he investigated the resilience of modern power systems to hurricanes. He completed his M.S. degree in Structural Engineering at the John A. Blume Earthquake Engineering Center at Stanford University in 2014 and his undergraduate studies in Civil Engineering at the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería in Lima, Peru (B.S. in 2011). He also earned his Ph.D. in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Stanford University, where he evaluated policies to improve the resilience of hospitals, power systems, and housing infrastructure using cutting-edge earthquake engineering, statistical, and machine learning techniques. Ceferino has conducted earthquake risk analyses for the World Bank to support country-wide retrofitting policies in Central Asia. He is also the co-founder of a Peru-based startup, Yanapay, which developed a comprehensive and free platform for earthquake and tsunami risk visualization.
