EPICentre Seminar - iRESIST+ Innovative Seismic & Energy Retrofitting of the Existing Building Stock

21 July 2020, 1:00 pm–2:00 pm

111

Of the current EU building stock, 80% was built before the 1990's when modern seismic and energy provisions were put in practice. These buildings require upgrading to meet modern standards, to prevent significant human and economic losses from earthquakes and reduce their energy consumption. To achieve cost effectiveness, and hence incentivise renovation, integrating energy retrofitting with seismic strengthening is explored in the iRESIST+ project at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC).

A novel retrofit approach combining inorganic textile-based composites with thermal insulation systems was evaluated through numerical simulations and will be validated experimentally for a full-scale building at the JRC's ELSA reaction wall facility. The results presented in this presentation stem from a recent publication in collaboration with colleagues from the JRC, Dr. Dionysios Bournas (PI) and Dr. Leonidas Kouris (MSCA-IF SPecTRUM) and Carmen Maduta (PhD Student) from the Polytechnic University of Timisoara.
