Welcome to the team!

24 January 2020

Introducing - and welcoming - Simon Barnes, a recent recruit to the Professional Services team in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. We asked Simon a few introductory questions...

Simon Barnes

Which group are you working alongside in the Department?
As departmental lead for the technical staff and as infrastructure manager, I’ll likely find myself working with everyone in the department before very long!

Tell us a little bit about your educational/work background?
I studied at the University of Kent, first for a BSc and then an MSc in Physics. I spent a few years after that working in schools and colleges before becoming the supervising technician for a postgraduate teaching lab at the University of Surrey Physics department. I was promoted to Laboratory Superintendent there in 2014, continuing in that role until joining UCL this January.

How did you get into (and stay in!) Engineering?
I actually started out studying Physics as I had an interest in planetary science and space exploration. As time went on I became more interested in the engineering aspects, for example my MSc involved ballistic studies of spacecraft shielding. Coming back in to HE as a technical manager was really exciting-at Surrey the work in the labs was very varied; one group might be busy manufacturing & characterising novel radiation detectors for medical physics and nuclear security, another would be doing NMR studies of water flow within living trees, while yet another might be designing and building a detector array for nuclear physics research (to one day go out to a beamline somewhere in another part of the world). Now I’m looking forward to learning more about all the research going on here at UCL EEE.

What are your interests beyond Engineering?
I love the outdoors, and I try to get out in to the countryside every weekend for a good long walk. Other than that-food, time with friends and travel are all high on the list.
