Dr Robert Thompson

The institute Manager is a role which spans both Professional services and Academic remits. Dr Thompson's role includes:

  • Organisation management of the Institute.
  • Development of External engagement.
  • Identification and development of opportunities for technical involvement from the institute.
  • In collaboration with Institute directors development of the Institute strategy.
  • Leading on the execution of the Institute Strategy with both an Internal (wider UCL) and External viewpoint.
  • Leads on Institute communications, including the development of non-specialist technical reports and presentations.

  • Assist with the design of precision parts using latest Cad modelling technology
  • Manufacture of items using Latest CNC technology to a high  precision in a variety of materials
  • Assist with the design and manufacture of 3D printable items for students and academics for teaching and research (from late 2019)
  • Assist the department with any minor issues with the Infrastructure of labs and offices
  • Liaise with other departments that may require our assistance with design and manufacture of research equipment

  • Responsible for day-to-day operation and maintenance of the nanotechnology laboratory.
  • Supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate laboratory users.
  • Training of new laboratory users, and induction for 10th floor cleanroom.
  • Assists in teaching MSc nanotechnology modules NANOGC07, and NANOGC03.
  • Facilitate experimental research with Academics and Postgraduate researchers.
  • Monitor Usage of 10th floor cleanroom and additional lab space on 9th floor.

Martin Scott

  • Provide assistance and advice for printed circuit board designs and layout.
  • Manufacture of through hole plated Printed Circuited Boards, multi-layer PCBs (4-6 layers) and flexible circuits.
  • Lasered  RF-boards using our LPKF U3 laser (sub 100 micron features)
  • Lasered solder paste masks for solder screen printing.
  • Electronic component assembly techniques.
  • Maintenance and support for all PCB equipment and chemical processes.
