Welcome to the team!

8 January 2020

Introducing - and welcoming - Joe Hird, a recent recruit to the Professional Services team in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. We asked Joe a few introductory questions...

Joe Hird

Which group are you working alongside in the Department?
I am part of the Professional Services team and am the first point of contact in the Department’s admin office (Roberts Building, 7th floor, rm 705); I oversee all post and parcel distribution, monitor and replenish stationery, paper, tea, coffee, book rooms and catering for departmental events, maintain reading lists, sort out printing – including the all-important undergrad lecture notes!

Tell us a little bit about your educational/research background?
My most fond memories come from my time spent at university and this is why I started a career in the educational sector. I studied at De Montfort University and attained a BA (Hons), Drama Studies. Yes, I studied Drama which believe it or not, I did not dress in black pretending to be a tree all the time (surprisingly a lot of my friends assumed that’s what I did for three years).

How did you get into (and stay in!) this field?
After my studies I was lucky enough to start working as a Careers Administrator at an interior design school based in Chelsea and thus, started my career in the educational sector. I receive great satisfaction helping people and feel at home in an educational environment and this is why I wanted to pursue a career in a renowned educational institution. After temping for Imperial College London and University College London, by chance, I was connected with Vicky Coombes and as they say, the rest was history! Since becoming a permanent member of staff for the Department, I hope I have made a positive impact in the short time I have been here and hope to continue to do so in future.

What are your interests outside of work?
I love going to the theatre but most importantly I come from a huge family from Yorkshire and love spending as much time as I can with them. I like to tell people that I’m a twin! It’s a good way to get to know me and others.

Any motivational quotes that inspire you?
Not a quote but I did read a book recently called The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The House by Charlie Mackesy. I highly recommend reading this as a motivational piece of material and the illustrations are simply spectacular.
