Elias Galiounas

Elias Galiounas

Background:
Elias was born in Limassol, Cyprus and holds a first-class MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Edinburgh. Before joining the EIL as a PhD researcher in October 2020 he spent three years working as an aerospace engineer for Rolls-Royce on various projects, including a hybrid-electric demonstrator aircraft. His passion for research and sustainability led him to pursue a PhD in battery technologies.

Research Summary:
Elias’ research interests are around the optimal operation of battery packs at systems level, achieved through intelligent battery management strategies tailored to the application. Battery models with predictive capabilities are essential tools for a battery management system (BMS), however, the processing power and memory of the embedded electronics used as BMS is limited. As battery models vary in their fidelity and computational requirements, the possibility of combining online and offline models in an adaptive strategy is promising. Data-driven methods that monitor a single vehicle or an entire fleet throughout its life can also provide significant enhancements. An intelligent battery management strategy shall aim to make near-optimal trade-offs between operational factors, such as power extraction and charge utilisation, and the maximisation of the asset’s life.
